Oceanário de Lisboa

The Oceanário de Lisboa stands on the waterfront of the Parque das Nações district, built for Expo 98 on land reclaimed along the Tagus estuary. Designed by American architect Peter Chermayeff, the building appears to float on the water, its central tank holding around four million litres and housing one of the most diverse collections of marine life in Europe. Sharks, sunfish, otters, and penguins share space across four distinct ocean habitats representing the Atlantic, Pacific, Indian, and Antarctic seas.

The Oceanário has long been recognised as one of the finest aquariums on the continent, drawing attention not only for its scale but for its commitment to conservation and environmental education.
