Is this the same as a Venice gondola ride?

No. The Florentine barchetto is a different boat with a different history, predating the Venetian gondola. The Arno River experience is quite different from Venice's canals: wider water, Renaissance palace facades, and sunset views of Ponte Vecchio. Florence's version is less well known but equally atmospheric.
