The Amsterdam Dungeon

The Amsterdam Dungeon occupies a suitably atmospheric location in the Dutch capital, drawing on eight centuries of the city's darker history to create a live-actor theatrical experience unlike any conventional museum. Set across a series of elaborately designed scenes, the attraction recreates some of the most turbulent and troubling episodes from Amsterdam's past, including the horrors of the plague, the brutal workings of the Spanish Inquisition, and the grim spectacle of public execution on the Dam. Actors, special effects, and immersive sets combine to place visitors directly inside the stories rather than at a comfortable distance from them.

The experience currently on offer includes standard entry tickets as well as a combined option that pairs the Dungeon with a one-hour canal cruise, allowing guests to see the city from the water after their underground encounter with its history. The canals themselves are a fitting counterpoint, having witnessed centuries of Amsterdam's commercial triumphs and social upheavals, many of which feed directly into the stories told inside.
