The Musée National Picasso in Paris occupies the Hôtel Salé, a grand seventeenth-century mansion in the Marais district that was restored and adapted to house one of the most significant collections of Pablo Picasso's work anywhere in the world. The museum opened in 1985 following a donation of works from Picasso's heirs to the French state in lieu of inheritance taxes, a arrangement that brought together paintings, sculptures, drawings, ceramics, and personal archives spanning the artist's entire career. The collection traces Picasso's development from his early academic studies through the Blue and Rose periods, Cubism, and beyond, offering an unusually complete picture of a single artist's evolution.

The Hôtel Salé itself, with its ornate stone staircase and carved façade, forms a striking counterpoint to the modernist energy of the works inside. Priority access tickets are available for visitors who wish to enter the permanent collection without queuing at the door.
