The Anne Frank Monument stands in Amsterdam as a quiet but powerful tribute to one of the most widely read diarists of the twentieth century. Designed by the Dutch sculptor Mari Andriessen and unveiled in 1957, the bronze statue depicts Anne Frank as a young girl and is situated on Westermarkt square, close to the Westerkerk and not far from the house on the Prinsengracht where Anne and her family hid during the German occupation of the Netherlands. The monument has become a place of reflection for visitors from across the world, drawing those who come to understand the human cost of the Second World War and the persecution of Jewish people under Nazi rule.

The surrounding Jordaan neighbourhood offers considerable historical and cultural depth, and an audio guided tour of the Red Light District provides a broader introduction to Amsterdam's layered past, taking in the stories and architecture of one of Europe's oldest city centres.
