O tym miejscu

The DDR Museum stands on the banks of the Spree in central Berlin, directly opposite the Berlin Cathedral and a short walk from Museum Island. It is dedicated to everyday life in the German Democratic Republic, the socialist state that governed East Germany from 1949 until reunification in 1990. The museum takes a hands-on approach that sets it apart from conventional historical institutions: visitors can open drawers, sit inside a Trabant, and step into a reconstructed East German living room to get a tangible sense of how ordinary people lived under the regime.

The permanent exhibition covers subjects ranging from state surveillance and collective agriculture to fashion, food, and leisure culture in the GDR. It draws on personal objects, archival material, and interactive displays to present a layered picture of a society that shaped the lives of millions. Admission tickets are available for the permanent collection, making the museum one of the more accessible stops on any serious tour of Berlin's twentieth-century history.
