Tentang tempat

Mengenai tempat ini

The Palácio Nacional da Ajuda stands on the Ajuda hill in western Lisbon, occupying a commanding position above the River Tagus. Construction began in the early nineteenth century following the destruction of the previous royal wooden palace in the 1755 earthquake, though the building was never fully completed. It served as the official residence of the Portuguese royal family from the reign of Luís I until the proclamation of the Republic in 1910, and its interiors remain among the most intact examples of nineteenth-century royal decoration in Portugal.

Today the palace operates as a national museum, preserving an extraordinary collection of furniture, paintings, silverware, porcelain, and textiles accumulated by the Braganza dynasty across successive reigns. Visitors move through state rooms and private apartments that retain their original furnishings, offering a direct encounter with the domestic and ceremonial life of the Portuguese court. The palace also holds a significant library and hosts temporary exhibitions drawn from its permanent holdings.
