About the venue

About this venue

The Oceanário de Lisboa sits on the waterfront of the Parque das Nações district, built on a former industrial stretch of the Tagus estuary that was transformed for Expo 98. Designed by the American architect Peter Chermayeff, the building appears to float on the water, its central tank holding more than five million litres and housing one of Europe's most diverse collections of marine life. Sharks, sunfish, rays, and thousands of smaller species share this vast central ocean tank, while four surrounding habitats represent the North Atlantic, Antarctic, Pacific, and Indian oceans, each with its own distinct climate and wildlife.

The Oceanário has earned a reputation as one of the finest aquariums in Europe, drawing visitors who come to observe its resident sea otters, penguins, and the extraordinary variety of fish and invertebrates on display. Its position within the Parque das Nações also makes it a natural starting point for exploring a district that retains much of the architectural ambition of its Expo origins.
