About the venue

About this venue

The National Tile Museum in Lisbon occupies the former Madre de Deus Convent, a sixteenth-century religious complex whose Manueline church and baroque-tiled interiors are themselves among the finest exhibits on display. The museum traces the history of the azulejo, the painted ceramic tile that has shaped Portuguese architecture and decorative arts for more than five centuries, from early Moorish geometric patterns through to twentieth-century figurative panels.

The collection includes the celebrated Lisbon Panorama, a vast blue-and-white tile panel depicting the city's waterfront as it appeared before the 1755 earthquake, making it an irreplaceable historical document as much as a work of art. Entry tickets grant access to the permanent galleries spread across the convent's cloisters, chapels, and former monastic rooms, where thousands of individual tiles and complete architectural installations chart the craft's evolution across Portugal and its former territories.
