The National Gallery stands on the north side of Trafalgar Square in central London, housing one of the greatest collections of Western European paintings in the world. Founded in 1824, the gallery holds more than 2,300 works spanning from the mid-thirteenth century to the early twentieth century, including masterpieces by Leonardo da Vinci, Rembrandt, Vermeer, Turner, and Van Gogh. The main building, designed by William Wilkins and completed in 1838, has been extended several times, most notably with the Sainsbury Wing, which opened in 1991 and is dedicated to early Renaissance painting.

Visitors to the gallery today can explore the permanent collection through a digital audio guide, offering a self-directed route through the rooms at their own pace. Guided tours are also available, including options paired with an aperitif platter, a two-course lunch, or afternoon tea, making for a fuller afternoon in the building. A dedicated guided tour for children introduces younger visitors to the collection in an accessible and engaging way. The gallery sits within walking distance of many of London's most significant landmarks.
