Calem Wine Cellars

Calem Wine Cellars sits on the southern bank of the Douro River in Vila Nova de Gaia, directly across the water from Porto's historic Ribeira district. The cellars belong to one of the oldest port wine houses in the region, and the vaulted stone caves that run beneath the building have stored and aged port wine for well over a century. Visitors move through the cellars on a guided tour that traces the full story of port production, from the vineyards of the Douro Valley to the wooden barrels stacked in the cool, dim chambers below ground.

The experience at Calem extends beyond wine education. The caves serve as an intimate performance space for fado, the Portuguese musical tradition recognised by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. Evening concerts take place among the barrels, with singers and guitarists performing the melancholic, expressive repertoire that has defined Portuguese popular music for generations. The combination of historic cellars, aged port, and live fado makes Calem one of the most distinctive cultural venues on the Gaia waterfront.
