À propos du lieu

À propos de ce lieu

The Basilica di San Marco stands at the eastern end of Piazza San Marco, serving as the cathedral church of Venice and one of the finest examples of Byzantine architecture in the Western world. Its facade is layered with golden mosaics, marble columns, and the famous bronze horses above the central portal, while the interior glows beneath a vast canopy of gilded ceiling mosaics that took centuries to complete. The building has been the seat of the Patriarch of Venice and, for much of its history, the private chapel of the Doge, placing it at the centre of Venetian civic and religious life for nearly a thousand years.

Visitors can explore the main basilica floor, the Pala d'Oro altarpiece encrusted with enamel and gemstones, and the Museo Marciano upstairs, which houses the original bronze horses and offers a close view across the piazza rooftops. Entry tickets with skip-the-line access are currently available, allowing more time inside one of Europe's most richly decorated sacred buildings.
