Acerca de este lugar

Praça da Figueira is one of central Lisbon's most recognisable open squares, sitting just steps from Rossio and the Baixa grid that was rebuilt after the 1755 earthquake under the direction of the Marquis of Pombal. The square takes its name from a fig tree market that once occupied the site, and for much of the nineteenth century it served as the city's main public market before opening into the broad, pedestrianised space it is today. A bronze equestrian statue of King João I presides over the centre of the square, offering a natural landmark for visitors arriving from the Alfama, the Mouraria, or the hills above.

The square acts as a starting point for the Yellow Bus hop-on hop-off service, which connects Lisbon's central districts with optional extensions to Sintra and along the waterfront by boat and tram. From here, passengers can pick up routes that pass the Belém Tower, the Jerónimos Monastery, and the viewpoints of the Bairro Alto, making Praça da Figueira a practical hub for exploring the wider city at an unhurried pace.
