Château de Vaux-le-Vicomte is a 17th-century French baroque château located roughly 40 minutes south-east of Paris, near Maincy in Seine-et-Marne. Completed in 1661 for Nicolas Fouquet, Louis XIV's finance minister, it is widely credited as the direct architectural and landscape model for the Palace of Versailles. The château was designed by architect Louis Le Vau, with interiors by Charles Le Brun and formal gardens by André Le Nôtre, whose 33-hectare geometric layout here became the template for French classical garden design. Entry tickets cover full access to the château, its gardens, and several on-site experiences, making it one of the more complete country estate visits available from Paris.
Inside the château, visitors move through state rooms, private apartments, the library, and the basement kitchens, all of which retain period furnishings and decoration. The Musée des Équipages, also known as the Coach Museum, houses a collection of historic carriages and equestrian equipment. The grounds include access to The Sound Forest: Fables in the Hollow of the Tree, and The Mystery of the Man in the Iron Mask. From April to September on weekends and school holidays, The Materials Trail is also open. Entry does not include access to the dome, golf cart rental, or costume rental. The cancellation policy is non-refundable, so confirm dates before booking.
