Über den Veranstaltungsort
Santa Maria Novella stands on the piazza of the same name in Florence, just a short walk from the central railway station that bears its name. Originally built as a Dominican church and convent complex, the building is one of the most significant examples of Italian Gothic and early Renaissance architecture in the city. Its facade, completed in the fifteenth century to a design by Leon Battista Alberti, introduced classical proportions to Florentine religious architecture and remains a landmark of the genre. The interior holds an extraordinary concentration of art, including Masaccio's fresco of the Trinity, widely regarded as a foundational work in the history of perspective painting, and frescoes by Ghirlandaio in the Tornabuoni Chapel.
The complex extends beyond the church itself to include cloisters, a chapter house, and the Spanish Chapel, all of which are open to visitors as part of the museum. An audio guide is currently available, allowing visitors to move through the spaces at their own pace while receiving commentary on the architecture, the art, and the history of the Dominican community that shaped this remarkable site.
