Quinta da Regaleira

Quinta da Regaleira is one of the most extraordinary estates in the Sintra hills, a UNESCO World Heritage landscape roughly 30 kilometres north-west of Lisbon. Commissioned by the wealthy Brazilian merchant António Augusto Carvalho Monteiro and designed by Italian architect Luigi Manini, the property was completed in the early twentieth century and blends Gothic, Renaissance, and Manueline architectural styles into a singular romantic vision. The palace itself is richly decorated with Masonic and Rosicrucian symbolism, while the surrounding gardens conceal grottoes, fountains, lakes, and the celebrated Initiation Well, a spiralling underground tower reached by a stone staircase that descends deep into the earth.

Visitors today can explore the estate through self-guided admission tickets, audio guide tickets that provide recorded commentary on the symbolism and history of each space, or fully guided tours that include a transfer from Lisbon. Each option reveals a different layer of Carvalho Monteiro's elaborate vision, from the ornate palace interiors to the labyrinthine garden paths that connect hidden chapels and subterranean passages beneath the Sintra hills.
