Sobre aquest lloc

The Basilique Cathédrale Saint-Denis stands in the northern suburb of Saint-Denis, a short journey from central Paris by Métro. Widely regarded as the birthplace of Gothic architecture, the cathedral was largely shaped under Abbot Suger in the twelfth century, whose radical use of pointed arches, ribbed vaulting, and large stained-glass windows transformed ecclesiastical building across Europe. The basilica served for centuries as the royal necropolis of France, and its crypt and ambulatory hold the tombs of nearly every French monarch from the tenth century onward, including those of Louis XVI and Marie-Antoinette.

Today the building operates as a historic monument and museum under the care of the Centre des Monuments Nationaux, welcoming visitors who come to study its extraordinary medieval stonework, its Renaissance funerary sculpture, and its treasury of royal regalia. Admission tickets grant access to the nave, the choir, the crypt, and the royal tombs, offering a rare encounter with more than a thousand years of French history contained within a single, luminous Gothic structure.
