Gaudí's Crypt in Colonia Güell is the unfinished 1908 structure where he tested the structural techniques later used in the Sagrada Família.
Gaudí's Crypt and Colonia Güell is an attraction outside Barcelona, set within a 19th-century textile workers' village commissioned by industrialist Eusebi Güell. The Crypt of Colonia Güell, begun in 1908 and left unfinished in 1914, is widely regarded as the structural laboratory in which Gaudí developed and tested the catenary arch and funicular chain methods he later applied to the Sagrada Família. The building sits in Santa Coloma de Cervelló, roughly 20 kilometres from the city centre, and the surrounding village retains much of its original planned layout, making it one of the more coherent examples of late 19th-century industrial urbanism near Barcelona.
Entry covers access to both the Crypt and the wider Colonia Güell site, and an audio guide is included to walk visitors through the architectural and historical context of each. Inside the Crypt, the basalt and brick columns, leaning at calculated angles, the rough-hewn vaulted ceiling, and the stained-glass windows demonstrate the structural logic that underpins much of Gaudí's later work. The village itself includes workers' housing, a school, and communal buildings designed by Gaudí's contemporaries. Note that the site is not wheelchair accessible, transport from Barcelona is not included, and the starting point is Carrer Claudi Güell 6. Tickets are non-refundable, so confirm your date before booking.
Make your way to Carrer Claudi Güell 6 and arrive in good time before your visit begins. The site sits outside Barcelona, so factor in travel time when planning your day.
Colònia Güell is an open village site, and your ticket covers both the Crypt itself and the surrounding colony. Wear comfortable shoes, as you will be moving between outdoor and indoor areas. The audio guide is included and will accompany you at your own pace throughout the visit.
