About St. Mark's Basilica: Hosted Entry Ticket (Cathedral Only)

St. Mark's Basilica is the cathedral church of Venice, standing at the eastern end of Piazza San Marco and serving as one of the finest surviving examples of Byzantine architecture in Western Europe. Construction began in 828 AD to house the relics of Saint Mark the Evangelist, and the building reached its current form across several centuries of expansion, incorporating Gothic portals and Renaissance additions alongside its original Byzantine core. The interior is covered by five large domes and more than 8,000 square metres of gold-ground mosaics, accumulated from the 11th century onwards.

The marble floor, laid in the 12th century, features an undulating surface that mirrors the movement of the Venetian lagoon beneath, and the columns, carvings, and inlaid stonework throughout the nave draw on materials brought from across the Byzantine world and beyond.

What to expect

This ticket provides hosted entry to the ground floor of the cathedral, with a host on hand to facilitate access and guide you through the entry process. Once inside, a digital audio guide, available through an app in multiple languages, delivers short informative tracks on the basilica's history, mosaics, and architecture. You will need your own headphones. There is no fixed schedule, so you can move at your own pace along a clearly marked route. Entry also includes access to the Basilica della Salute and Basilica Santa Maria Assunta. The hosted visit runs approximately 20 minutes, though you may linger at any point of interest. The rooftop terrace, St. Mark's Museum, and the Pala d'Oro golden altarpiece are not included in this ticket.

St. Mark's Basilica and getting there

The basilica sits directly on St. Mark's Basilica square, Piazza San Marco, which is served by the Vaporetto waterbus at the San Zaccaria and San Marco stops. The starting point for this ticket is Piazza San Marco itself. For a broader look at what surrounds the area, the Venice attractions hub covers nearby sites and further options across the city.
