Mooney Mooney sits in a narrow valley on the Central Coast of New South Wales, where the old Pacific Highway winds down through dense eucalypt forest before crossing the Hawkesbury River. The settlement is small enough that most travellers pass through without stopping, yet the waterway it overlooks is one of the most historically significant on the New South Wales coast. The Hawkesbury was a vital supply route for the early colony, and the river system that fans out toward Broken Bay still carries that sense of unhurried consequence, broad and tidal, lined with sandstone escarpments and mangrove flats that have changed very little in appearance since the first European boats moved through them.

The geography here rewards patience. Broken Bay, where the Hawkesbury meets the Tasman Sea, is flanked by Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park to the south and Brisbane Water National Park to the north, and the water between them is sheltered enough to support aquaculture that would be impossible on an exposed coastline. Pearl farming has operated in these waters for decades, and the Broken Bay Pearl Farm is the experience that draws most visitors who do make a deliberate stop in this part of the world. A guided tour of the farm, combined with a river cruise through the bay, gives a clear account of how Akoya pearls are cultivated in the estuary, from the seeding of the oysters through to the harvest and grading of the finished pearls. The same operation offers an entry and guided oyster tasting alongside a boat cruise, which places the emphasis on the food and the water together rather than the production process alone.
