Marvel at the traditional collection of tiles at the National Tile Museum in Lisbon, and upgrade your ticket for an exclusive Lisbon city card.
The National Tile Museum is a museum in Lisbon dedicated to the history and craft of the azulejo, the decorative ceramic tile that has shaped Portuguese architecture and visual culture for over five centuries. Housed in a former 16th-century convent, the Convento da Madre de Deus, the building itself is part of the collection, with its ornate Manueline church, gilded woodwork, and azulejo-lined cloister forming a backdrop that few purpose-built museums can match. The museum traces the full arc of tile-making in Portugal, from early Moorish geometric patterns through Renaissance figurative work to 20th-century modernist panels.
Visitors move through galleries arranged chronologically, taking in individual decorative tiles, large-scale narrative panels, and the centrepiece of the collection: a 23-metre panoramic tile panel depicting Lisbon's waterfront as it appeared before the 1755 earthquake. The convent church and its adjoining chapel are included in the visit, as is access to the permanent collection across all floors. Entry tickets cover general admission to all permanent galleries, and an optional upgrade adds a Lisbon city card for broader use across Lisbon Sintra attractions. Check the National Tile Museum schedule for current opening hours and any temporary exhibitions running alongside the permanent display.
Free cancellation up to 24 hours before the start time.
