Kuala Selangor sits at the mouth of the Selangor River on Malaysia's west coast, roughly an hour's drive north of Kuala Lumpur, and it occupies a place in the national story that its modest size does not immediately suggest. The town was once the seat of the Selangor Sultanate, and the hilltop fort of Bukit Melawati still carries the weight of that history. Firefly watching along the Selangor River, particularly around the village of Kampung Kuantan, has made the area genuinely well known among nature travellers. The synchronised flashing of thousands of Pteroptyx tener fireflies in the riverside berembang trees is a phenomenon that draws visitors from Kuala Lumpur on weekend evenings, and it remains one of the more quietly extraordinary natural spectacles in Southeast Asia. The mangroves also shelter smooth otters, proboscis monkeys, and a remarkable variety of migratory and resident waterbirds, making the estuary a serious destination for wildlife observation.
