Few places carry the weight of Archaía Olympía quite so literally. The ancient sanctuary of Zeus that gives this small Greek village its name was, for more than a thousand years, the most important religious and athletic site in the classical world, drawing competitors and pilgrims from across the Mediterranean every four years for the Games that would eventually lend their name to a modern global institution. That continuity, from antiquity to the present Olympic movement, is not metaphor but documented history, and it gives even a quiet afternoon walk through the archaeological site a particular gravity.

The village itself sits in the western Peloponnese, in the valley where the Alpheios and Kladeos rivers meet, and the landscape has changed less dramatically than one might expect. Umbrella pines shade the paths between fallen columns, and the scale of the Altis, the sacred enclosure that once held the Temple of Zeus and the Temple of Hera, only becomes clear on foot. The Temple of Zeus housed one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, the chryselephantine statue of Zeus by Pheidias, and though the statue is long gone, the workshop in which Pheidias is believed to have crafted it still stands as an excavated structure within the site.
