Skagafjörður is historically the horse-breeding heartland of Iceland, and the Icelandic horse, a breed brought to the island by Norse settlers over a thousand years ago and kept genetically isolated ever since, remains central to life in the valley. Farms along the fjord have bred these compact, sure-footed animals for generations, and riding across the lava-dusted terrain or through shallow glacial rivers is an experience that feels genuinely rooted in place rather than staged for visitors. The fjord itself is broad and often grey-green under overcast skies, flanked by mountains that hold snow well into spring and sometimes carry a dusting of it even in late summer.
