The ancient sanctuary of Zeus that gives this small Greek village its name was, for more than a thousand years, the most important religious and athletic site in the classical world, drawing competitors and pilgrims from across the Mediterranean every four years for the Games that would eventually lend their name to a modern global institution. The Temple of Zeus housed one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, the chryselephantine statue of Zeus by Pheidias, and though the statue is long gone, the workshop in which Pheidias is believed to have crafted it still stands as an excavated structure within the site.
