Terras de Bouro sits in the northwestern corner of Portugal's Minho region, a municipality defined less by urban density than by the extraordinary natural territory it contains. The Serra do Gerês rises steeply above river corridors carved by the Cávado and its tributaries, and the reservoir of Vilarinho das Furnas, created in the 1970s, submerged an entire village whose stone walls still surface during dry summers, a quietly haunting reminder of what was sacrificed for hydroelectric progress. The village of Vilarinho da Furna had been inhabited for centuries before its flooding, and its memory is kept in a small museum in Campo do Gerês that documents the community's way of life.
