Sauðárkrókur sits on the eastern shore of Skagafjörður, one of Iceland's deepest and most dramatic fjords, where the Tröllaskagi peninsula rises steeply to the north and the broad agricultural valley of Skagafjörður stretches inland to the south. It is the largest town in northern Iceland outside Akureyri, which still makes it a modest place by most measures, with a population that rarely exceeds three thousand.
