Somewhere beneath the sun-baked plains of Cappadocia, the ground opens into one of the most extraordinary feats of ancient engineering the world has produced. Derinkuyu is a small town in central Turkey's Nevşehir province, and its name is known globally not for anything on its surface but for what lies beneath it: an underground city of extraordinary depth and complexity, carved from soft volcanic tuff by communities who needed to disappear from the world above.

The underground city at Derinkuyu descends at least eight storeys into the earth, with tunnels, ventilation shafts, wells, stables, wine presses, churches, and spaces that could shelter tens of thousands of people. It is the deepest of the underground settlements discovered across Cappadocia, and it connects via a long tunnel to the similarly vast underground complex at Kaymaklı several kilometres to the north. Historians associate the construction and expansion of these spaces with early Christian communities seeking refuge from persecution, though the origins of the excavation may reach back considerably further. Standing in the lower chambers, where the air is cool and the stone walls press close, the scale of collective human effort required to hollow out this place becomes genuinely difficult to comprehend.
