The ancient sanctuary of Zeus that gives this small Greek village its name was, for more than a thousand years, the most important religious and athletic site in the classical world, drawing competitors and pilgrims from across the Mediterranean every four years for the Games that would eventually lend their name to a modern global institution. The village itself sits in the western Peloponnese, in the valley where the Alpheios and Kladeos rivers meet, and the landscape has changed less dramatically than one might expect.
