Your guide to Mellieħa
Mellieħa occupies the northernmost tip of Malta, a position that gives it a character quite distinct from the island's more densely settled south. The town climbs a dramatic ridge above one of the Mediterranean's most celebrated sandy beaches, Mellieħa Bay, and looks out across a narrow channel of water towards the smaller islands of Comino and Gozo. This geography is not incidental to the place; it shapes everything from the pace of daily life to the reasons people come here in the first place.
The old town itself rewards unhurried exploration. The parish church of Our Lady of Victories crowns the hilltop and has been a place of pilgrimage for centuries, its sanctuary carved into the living rock below the main structure. The streets around it are lined with the honey-coloured limestone that defines Maltese architecture across the archipelago, and the views from the upper town extend far enough on a clear day to take in the Sicilian coastline to the north. Mellieħa has none of the commercial density of Valletta or St Julian's, which is precisely what draws visitors who want proximity to the sea without the surrounding noise.
