Discover every corner of the UNESCO site, Batalha Monastery, and upgrade your experience with a Lisbon Card to unlock more of the city's attractions!
Batalha Monastery is a landmark in Batalha, Portugal, roughly an hour north of Lisbon, and one of the finest examples of Portuguese Gothic architecture in the country. Construction began in 1386 under King João I to commemorate the Battle of Aljubarrota, and the complex took over a century to complete, with contributions from successive monarchs shaping its layered style. The monastery sits at Largo Infante Dom Henrique and has held UNESCO World Heritage status since 1983, recognised for its architectural and historical significance.
Visitors move through the Royal Cloister, the Founder's Chapel, and the unfinished Chapels of King Duarte, a roofless structure left incomplete when royal patronage shifted to Lisbon. The Founder's Chapel holds the tomb of João I and his queen, Philippa of Lancaster, alongside those of their sons, including Henry the Navigator. The church interior features soaring vaulted ceilings and carved stonework throughout. Tickets grant full access to the monastery complex, including all open chapels, cloisters, and the permanent exhibition. For more to see across the region, Lisbon Sintra attractions include a range of monuments and sites within easy reach.
These tickets cannot be cancelled or rescheduled.
