The synchronised flashing of thousands of Pteroptyx tener fireflies in the riverside berembang trees is a phenomenon that draws visitors from Kuala Lumpur on weekend evenings, and it remains one of the more quietly extraordinary natural spectacles in Southeast Asia. The mangroves also shelter smooth otters, proboscis monkeys, and a remarkable variety of migratory and resident waterbirds, making the estuary a serious destination for wildlife observation.
