Few medieval towns in Europe have survived as completely as Sighișoara. Perched on a hilltop above the Târnava Mare river in the heart of Transylvania, the citadel quarter is not a reconstruction or a theme-park approximation of the Middle Ages but a living settlement where people still inhabit houses that were built by Saxon craftsmen six and seven centuries ago. UNESCO recognised this in 1999, placing the fortified old town on its World Heritage list alongside a handful of comparable sites across the continent.

The Saxons who founded and shaped Sighișoara, known in German as Schässburg, arrived in the twelfth century at the invitation of Hungarian kings who wanted skilled settlers to develop and defend the frontier region of Transylvania. Their legacy is everywhere in the upper town: the ring of towers named after the guilds that maintained them, the steep cobbled lanes, the polychrome roof tiles, and the Church on the Hill, reached by a covered wooden staircase of 175 steps that has sheltered worshippers from Transylvanian winters for centuries. The clock tower, which now houses a history museum, has dominated the skyline since the fourteenth century and remains the most recognisable silhouette in the region.
