Ihr Reiseführer für Kailua-Kona
Kailua-Kona sits on the dry, sun-baked western flank of the Big Island of Hawaii, a stretch of coastline where black lava fields meet the Pacific and the sky stays clear for the better part of the year. Unlike the lush, rain-soaked eastern side of the island, the Kona coast owes its character to volcanic geology and calm, sheltered waters, a combination that has shaped everything from its agricultural history to the experiences visitors come here for. The town itself is compact and unhurried, centred on Ali'i Drive, a seafront road lined with low-rise shops, open-air restaurants, and the historic Mokuaikaua Church, which dates to 1837 and is considered the oldest Christian church in Hawaii.
The waters just offshore are among the most ecologically rich in the Hawaiian archipelago. Kealakekua Bay, a few miles south of town, is a state marine life conservation district and the site where the British explorer Captain James Cook met his death in 1779. The bay's protected status has allowed its coral reef to remain in exceptional condition, and the clarity of the water here is genuinely striking. Snorkelling excursions into the bay are among the most sought-after experiences on the island, with several operators running morning and afternoon trips that combine reef exploration with the chance to encounter spinner dolphins, which are a near-constant presence in these waters. Whale watching becomes part of the picture during the winter months, when humpback whales migrate through the channel between the Big Island and Maui.
