The underground city at Derinkuyu descends at least eight storeys into the earth, with tunnels, ventilation shafts, wells, stables, wine presses, churches, and spaces that could shelter tens of thousands of people. It is the deepest of the underground settlements discovered across Cappadocia, and it connects via a long tunnel to the similarly vast underground complex at Kaymaklı several kilometres to the north. Historians associate the construction and expansion of these spaces with early Christian communities seeking refuge from persecution, though the origins of the excavation may reach back considerably further.
