Sauðárkrókur sits on the eastern shore of Skagafjörður, one of Iceland's deepest and most dramatic fjords, where the Tröllaskagi peninsula rises steeply to the north and the broad agricultural valley of Skagafjörður stretches inland to the south. It is the largest town in northern Iceland outside Akureyri, which still makes it a modest place by most measures, with a population that rarely exceeds three thousand. That modesty is part of its appeal. The surrounding landscape is the primary reason to come. Skagafjörður is historically the horse-breeding heartland of Iceland, and the Icelandic horse, a breed brought to the island by Norse settlers over a thousand years ago and kept genetically isolated ever since, remains central to life in the valley. Farms along the fjord have bred these compact, sure-footed animals for generations, and riding across the lava-dusted terrain or through shallow glacial rivers is an experience that feels genuinely rooted in place rather than staged for visitors. The fjord itself is broad and often grey-green under overcast skies, flanked by mountains that hold snow well into spring and sometimes carry a dusting of it even in late summer.
