Kailua-Kona sits on the dry, sun-baked western flank of the Big Island of Hawaii, a stretch of coastline where black lava fields meet the Pacific and the sky stays clear for the better part of the year. Snorkelling excursions into the bay are among the most sought-after experiences on the island, with several operators running morning and afternoon trips that combine reef exploration with the chance to encounter spinner dolphins, which are a near-constant presence in these waters. Whale watching becomes part of the picture during the winter months, when humpback whales migrate through the channel between the Big Island and Maui.
