Few places carry the weight of Archaía Olympía quite so literally. The ancient sanctuary of Zeus that gives this small Greek village its name was, for more than a thousand years, the most important religious and athletic site in the classical world, drawing competitors and pilgrims from across the Mediterranean every four years for the Games that would eventually lend their name to a modern global institution.
